How to send / share big files?

Did you ever need to send an email with a huge attachment? Like many email providers, currently gmail restricts the maximum allowed email attachment size to 10 MB. If you want to send emails with attachments greater than 10 MB then the alternatives are:

1. Consider splitting the file into several parts (of 10MB each), name them in logical order and send them as separate email attachments. Some of the softwares that aid in splitting and joining the files are:

a. Hjsplit
Very easy and intutive to use. The downside is the requirement to have hjsplit on the receivers machine to join the files.

b. Gsplit
Very good one and to join the pieces, you donot need to install gsplit. It generates self extracting executables.

2. Consider an email service like lycos which offers unlimited attachment size.

3. If you are sending photos, you can consider uploading them to any of the free image hosting services like:

a. Image Shack
b. Photo Bucket

You can also make the uploaded albums private so you protect your photos.

4. If you are sending videos, you can share them by uploading to free video hosting services like:

a. Google Video
b. youtube

5. If you want to send very large files (>100MB) you could upload them to the free file hosting services like:

a. Megaupload
b. Rapidshare

So you will never have to worry about the attachment size limitations of email providers.
